INDIAN PHOTO ALBUMS


S. STEVENS, R.F.C., 1917.

This complete album comprises circa 96 photographs by S. Stevens, an accomplished amateur photographer serving in India 1917 with the Royal Flying Corp.

The album begins with views of Mussoorie, including the Bazaar and the Halfway House Restaurant before moving to Ghats at Benares (Varanesi), three wonderful views of the city taken from minaret. There are several views of Lucknow including the Imambara Hussainabad at night. The photographer moves to the North West Frontier and photographs the mosque at the Islamia College, Peshawar and a journey along the Khyber Pass.

Generally, the album comprises city views, some glimpses of cultural and rural life are represented by charcoal carriers, porter, snake charmer. The photographer was interested in the local transport such as rickshaw and dandy.

There is a wonderful photograph of spectators at Dera Dun Races.

Bound in half morocco, lacking spine, photographs mounted on brown card titled in white ink.
