INDIAN PHOTO ALBUMS

UNKNOWN AUTHOR, circa 1917.

This complete album comprises circa 160 photographs by an accomplished amateur photographer serving in India circa. 1917, probably with the Royal Flying Corp.

The album begins with views along the North West Frontier, followed by a group of images of the Taj Mahal and Mughal tombs including the I’timād-ud-Daulah (commissioned by Nur Jahan for her father) and Jahangir’s Palace. There are further areal views of the Taj Mahal and Agra (?).

Among the cities and street scenes photographed are Agra, Delhi, Peshawar and Calcutta.

Rural life is captured through images of tea pickers, cotton fields, oxen at work, trains and an iconic photograph of a shepherd holding a lamb.

The more unusual subjects are a rally “Nationalism is Self-Respect”, a man apparently diving from an historic monument and lightning over the mountains.

There are images of military life including areal views and crashed aircraft, but the overall interest is in cultural life and architectural and pastoral views.

Contained in green cloth bound album, oblong folio.
